7th week in Belfast
(Bar visit, shopping tour and the dripping ceiling)

We are now in the penultimate week of our internship and today we have finally planned our long-awaited visit to the pub. Before that, we strolled through the city centre and went into all the shops that seemed interesting to us. I bought a new diary and underwear and the others bought some smaller everyday stuff.

After a short stop at the accommodation to put away the things we had bought, we went to the pub. We chose the pub Kelly's Cellars for the evening, because it was recommended to us by many people and is well-known in the city. It was built on 14.03.1720 and is one of the oldest pubs in Belfast.

Luckily we booked a seat in advance, because the pub was very crowded that evening. We drank our way through all the drinks the pub offered, talked and played cards.

The next day we were unfortunately informed by our flatmates that there was another case of corona in the Czech group which was also confirmed with a PCR test. As the others had already gone into self-isolation last week due to the other corona incident, we fortunately did not have to go into isolation. Nevertheless, we now have to do self-tests every day and some of us are working from home for safety's sake, including myself.

Since there is not much to do at home office at the moment, I have been given time by my boss to pursue my private IT projects. After the online meeting with my boss, I cycled towards the city centre to go shopping for lunch. I wanted to cook cheese and leek cream soup for the group today. Of course, I made it completely myself and it turned out very well. We had baguettes with it and everyone was full and happy at the end.

Wednesday evening the weather was predicted to be bad and I was glad that I had my weekly chiropractor appointment a little earlier than usual. As always, it went well and I felt very good and physically relaxed after the treatment.

On the way home, the weather got worse by every minute and I got completely wet just before arriving. But for that I saw a beautiful rainbow, which actually had a second rainbow over it.

The rain in the evening was very heavy and unfortunately we noticed after a while that it was dripping from the ceiling in our hallway. The dripping was so strong that the ceiling was already bending downwards and we had to call the emergency number of our agency and ask for help. The agency then sent the house owner over to solve the problem for the moment. The reason was a blocked drainage channel on the roof and therefore the water accumulated there and could not drain off properly.

On Thursday we all made ourselves comfortable at home, because the weather didn't allow anything else. It rained all day and it was very stormy. In the evening we all got a pizza, luckily the pizza place is right across the street, and watched 2 movies. One was The Lego Batman Movie and the other was The Devil All the Time.

Today, the last day of my blog entry, we went to the ODEON cinema in the city centre to watch the brand new movie Suicide Squad. In Germany, the film is unfortunately not yet released, but since we are in the UK, we have the opportunity to watch it here in the country and learn a little English on the side.

Arrival in a new country &
Start of quarantine in Belfast

On the day of departure, 12.06.2021, we met at about 8 am at BER airport. 6 people, all from the OSZ for Information and Medical Technology, our vocational school. Two of them I already knew from my class, the other three I met for the first time. As a freshly formed group, we immediately made our way to check-in.

1st week in Belfast
(Day 1 - Day 7 in quarantine)

Day 1: Since we are at the beginning of quarantine and don't have much to work with, I got up at 10am and got ready for the day. As some of us had already finished breakfast, I joined the others, ate and planned the day. We did a little online shopping at Tesco and thought about what we would like to eat for the day. As I hadn't got round to unpacking my bags yet, I went up to my room to do so. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite complete the task because the fire alarm in the house went off for no apparent reason. All six of us quickly got out and stood in front of the door on the street.  Fortunately, a staff member from Intern Europe was there to greet and instruct our two new guests from the Czech Republic. Sadly, the fire alarm can only be switched off in the neighbouring house and it took some time until it worked. So, despite the quarantine, we could already breathe a little of the good Belfast air. Fresh Belfast Air

5th week in Belfast
(Orange Day, Hospital and New Castle)

We are very lucky to be here in the country for a special day that is mainly celebrated in Northern Ireland. It is the official feast day by the 'Protestant Loyalists'. Here is a small excerpt from the corresponding Wiki article: "The Twelfth (also called the Glorious Twelfth or Orangemen's Day) is an Ulster Protestant celebration held on 12 July. It celebrates the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and victory of Protestant King William of Orange over Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne 1690, which ensured a Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. On and around the Twelfth, large parades are held by the Orange Order and Ulster loyalist marching bands, streets are covered with British flags and bunting, and large towering bonfires are lit in loyalist neighbourhoods." Today we plan to climb the Napoleon's Nose in Cavehill country park around midnight. Yes, the hilltop we climbed as a group last week. I can highly recommend the park to anyone who ever gets to B...
