Arrival in a new country &
Start of quarantine in Belfast

On the day of departure, 12.06.2021, we met at about 8 am at BER airport. 6 people, all from the OSZ for Information and Medical Technology, our vocational school. Two of them I already knew from my class, the other three I met for the first time. As a freshly formed group, we immediately made our way to check-in.

1st week in Belfast
(Day 1 - Day 7 in quarantine)

Day 1: Since we are at the beginning of quarantine and don't have much to work with, I got up at 10am and got ready for the day. As some of us had already finished breakfast, I joined the others, ate and planned the day. We did a little online shopping at Tesco and thought about what we would like to eat for the day. As I hadn't got round to unpacking my bags yet, I went up to my room to do so. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite complete the task because the fire alarm in the house went off for no apparent reason. All six of us quickly got out and stood in front of the door on the street.  Fortunately, a staff member from Intern Europe was there to greet and instruct our two new guests from the Czech Republic. Sadly, the fire alarm can only be switched off in the neighbouring house and it took some time until it worked. So, despite the quarantine, we could already breathe a little of the good Belfast air. Fresh Belfast Air

2nd week in Belfast
(End of quarantine, First day at work and the Giant’s Causeway)

Prologue: Since I am now on a full-time internship, implementing private IT projects on the side and also involved in many group activities, I have decided not to write down each day individually as before, but to focus on the important events of the week. As far as my free time is concerned, there is a clear difference compared to the last week in quarantine. The daily routine has to be structured more to get everything under one roof. So there will be more pictures in the blog and less text than the two blog entries before. But enough of the boring speech and off to my blog for the second week here in Belfast...

3rd week in Belfast
(Ulster Museum, gain work experience and the Titanic Quarter)

4th week in Belfast
(Cave Hill Country Park, tight work week and Bangor)

After our interesting but exhausting day yesterday to the Titanic Quarter, we continued today with an even longer tour towards Cave Hill Country Park to climb the mountain there. Cavehill is a rocky hill overlooking the city of Belfast with a height of 1,207 ft. It is marked by basalt cliffs and caves, and its distinguishing feature is 'Napoleon's Nose', a tall cliff which resembles the profile of the emperor Napoleon.

5th week in Belfast
(Orange Day, Hospital and New Castle)

We are very lucky to be here in the country for a special day that is mainly celebrated in Northern Ireland. It is the official feast day by the 'Protestant Loyalists'. Here is a small excerpt from the corresponding Wiki article: "The Twelfth (also called the Glorious Twelfth or Orangemen's Day) is an Ulster Protestant celebration held on 12 July. It celebrates the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and victory of Protestant King William of Orange over Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne 1690, which ensured a Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. On and around the Twelfth, large parades are held by the Orange Order and Ulster loyalist marching bands, streets are covered with British flags and bunting, and large towering bonfires are lit in loyalist neighbourhoods." Today we plan to climb the Napoleon's Nose in Cavehill country park around midnight. Yes, the hilltop we climbed as a group last week. I can highly recommend the park to anyone who ever gets to B...

6th week in Belfast
(Cinema, home office and the bike ride)

Since today is Sunday, we all slept in and had breakfast together a little later. Then we went to the cinema in the city centre to watch the new superhero film Black Widow from Marvel Studios. The others in my group walked and I took the bus because my back still hurt a lot. The film was really good and met all my expectations.
